Y Ahora Que...Que Vamos a Hacer?

The question of the hour is this...where do we begin. The idea is to begin in Southern South America and work our way by bus, train and boat back to North Carolina. Our freedom means we can start in a variety of places. The cheapest One-way ticket is to Santiago, Chile. However, there is a $100 fee for Americans arriving in Chile by air (apparently part of some political game). Another downside is that the farm we are looking at in Chile is a 2 hour walk from any town and has no electricity or other commodities. We may want to have a little more time to adjust before jumping to the further extremes of living without those spoils we have grown addicted to. I am not sure we are up for going cold turkey.

A ticket to Uruguay, a country we may not get to see if we do not begin there because it will be the opposite direction from our predicted route, is almost double. A mere ferry and bus ride to Buenos Aires, it would be convenient if not for the price tag.

Paraguay is similar to Uruguay in that it is quite cost prohibitive, but the temptation remains since we could potentially miss this country with it being (though less so) a bit out of the way.

Buenos Aires is moderately priced for the one way ticket, and would likely be the most convenient place to arrive given its supposed likeness to Europe and its proximity to one of our farms (hopefully). Decisions, decisions.

Another question to ponder. To insure or not to insure. We are trying to decide whether to purchase international health insurance in case of unforeseen circumstances. Essentially it is like we are in Vegas. We may be putting down a $700 bet that we will get hurt or extremely sick while travelling and the insurance company is taking our bet believing we will travel responsibly and will carry some amount of luck with us. Hmmmmm....I think we need to continue to consider our odds.
